Checking an assisted living facility in Texas
Texas HHSC licenses assisted living facilities under Health and Safety Code Chapter 247 and 26 TAC Chapter 553. The license type depends on whether residents can leave the building on their own in an emergency and whether they need staff at night.
CMS does not inspect or rate assisted living, so there is no Care Compare page for it. Inspections, complaints and enforcement are handled by the state. Nursing home vs assisted living

Inspections and records
- A Texas ALF must post a copy of its most recent inspection report in a public area that residents, employees and visitors can readily reach (26 TAC §553.271). Source
- HHSC’s public LTC Provider Search in TULIP lists licensed ALFs. Open a provider record there to see its inspection and enforcement history. Source
- HHSC publishes an Excel directory of every ALF with an active license. It includes license type, licensed capacity, Alzheimer certification and owner. The Texas list on this site comes from that directory. Source
